HISTORY

In 1982, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) felt the need to train its staff in French as a second language and to assess the second language capabilities of its employees, in-house and by its own linguistic specialists.  Second language instructors were hired and started in-house teaching as well as designing occupationally-related second language training programs and proficiency assessments.  The latter were conducted to determine the actual linguistic capabilities of CHEO’s staff.

The language training and testing sections of what was then called the Bilingual Services Department evolved into the Children’s Hospital Language Training Centre in 1987.  In 1991, it became New Avenues Linguistic Services inc. and was privatized in 1996.  Since then, New Avenues Linguistic Services (NALS) has provided consultation, language assessments, language training along with translation services in Ottawa, eastern, northern and southern Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and the Yukon.
